Oooh, cryptids. Down near where I live in Louisiana, we have a werewolf-type creature called the Rougarou. Basically built like a big man, head of a wolf.

i honestly can't blame him for hiding, i'd do the same thing if people were constantly trying to film me when i went on walks too

oh the rougarou is cool! i really love cajun folklore, it's really cool that it's a blend of a lot of different influences while still being a distinctly american tradition.

hmm i think one i'm pretty familiar with is the jersey devil!! all the sightings and concepts of it is honestly really cute in a weird way, it's like a scrunkly little thing with wings and idk why it's endearing lol

mothman is definitely up there with my favorites too! he's a classic for a reason. the second one def isn't a cryptid, since it's a spirit that's part of the belief system of several indigenous cultures that still exist and honestly it carries more weight than just some monster (like i don't even say or type the name out; even if it's not part of my culture's belief system i fully believe in and respect spirits from other indigenous cultures). but i think it's really meaningful how indigenous authors are now using it as a representation of colonialism and capitalism, because at its core it is a spirit of greed and selfishness.

my favorite cryptid is the wendigo because i find its relationship with cannibalism to be so utterly terrifying.

like i said above, definitely not a cryptid because it's part of several belief systems that still exist today, and those spirits carry more weight and significance than cryptids or monsters. it's definitely an apt representation of capitalism/colonialism/white hegemony though, which i think is really interesting.

trick or treat! i am suddenly blanking on every monster i have ever heard of, but if they count, i'll go with sea serpents, because as terrified as i am of things living in the water it's hard to beat their aesthetic...

sea serpents are really cool! there's so much we haven't explored in the ocean, so it's fun to think about what might be lurking in there.

trick or treat! my current favorite cyptid is mokèlé-mbèmbé, from the congo jungle. but honestly, i don't love it as much as i loved nessie when i was little.... i wrote a poem about the lochness monster for creative writing in grade school LOLLL

These aren't really cryptids but I looove selkies, I think they're neat 👀 Water-based mythological creatures are all pretty cool, mermaids and rusalki and all that, and I like the wide variety of ways they're portrayed, especially the dangerous takes on them like vengeful selkies whose seal-skins got stolen, sirens drowning sailors, etc.

Oh this is a tough one. I'm basic as fuck and really like vampires. the mythos is so flexible because "parasites" can be a metaphor for oppressors but also can be a metaphor for being dependent on other people like many oppressed people are (and it kinda offends me when people say NO, VAMPIRES ARE LITERALLY JUST OPPRESSORS???? bruh they're not real but people who might identify with them as victims are real). but in the spirit of the question I would say kuchi-sake onna. Did a whole project about that in college. I think it can be nice and flexible for a variety of man door car door hook hand door genre stories.

vampires are cool! i think it's really neat how they are almost exclusively presented as upper class parasites (especially in contrast with werewolves, who are always presented as working class), but there's lots of room to play with them in a more sympathetic space, especially with more modern vampire characters (like you said, as victims for example). i actually have a vampire oc for one of my games who subverts a lot of vampire tropes, according to my sister. i trust her because she literally studies horror literature, but i just wanted to make a vampire with more heart than brains, tbh i could talk about him forever though so im gonna stop myself there

also kuchisake onna is cool! it's really neat how she's a more recently developed yokai.
